Lunch Wrecked!

Sailing Away

When the party confronted Father Mannix, the father was trying to convince Cairan to join him and let these other civilians leave quietly. He was convinced that he was studying some magic knowledge that could be used for many people to have a choice when they die to continue the lives of their loved ones. He said he teamed up with the cultists because there wasn't any other way he could do such experiments. Garis basically told him it was a bad excuse, and that he is not a good priest.

As the battle started, Garis rushed forward to attack, and was deflected off to the side by some otherworldly force. Cairan prayed to Aibitir, which enchanted his mace to use for the fight, obviously the god took his side slightly more than Mannix's. Then, suddenly, Marigold turned the whole arena into a forested region, with trees and flowers and vines and a waterfall. Father Mannix was about to use a devastating spell, and it hit the large center tree instead, severing it.

The battle continued on, with Baldric singing to boost his friends, and Altair getting the drop on Mannix. Mannix released several other spells like a darkness spell and magic missiles. Scorchtail rushed forward, exploding the tree with her axe, and continuing to attack. Marigold turned into a tiger, and pounced on him from what remained of the central tree. Surrounded, Mannix tried his best to keep up against the barrage, but was eventually slain when Garis swung down with his halberd, severing the priest's arm.

Mannix let out a final call, urging Cairan to take over for him, and to hopefully continue where he left off, before breathing his final breath. Cairan took the holy symbol that would signify that he is now the father of the chapel back in town. The group also took the symbol from the dead body of Barang, in case they needed it to get out.

The group then started on their way out, telling the remaining cultists to disperse. The cultists gave in, leaving the premises and possibly going back to their homes or at least somewhere else. The party met back up with Oscar and the dwarves, who had found a seemingly mute man who had a finder's metal compass on him, who had helped Trival escape. The party took the compass and left for town, making it there in record time.

Talking to Bari the town mayor, Bari was relieved to hear the news of the cult, and that the ship now had a compass. He said he would throw a party for the group before they left, and the group members obliged. Garis tried to find more information about the cult, but was duped and lost some coin. Cairan tried to make new friends for the congregation, which he seemed to do, but during the party the church library was basically destroyed, books thrown about the floor.

The next morning, the party said their goodbyes, and the group started to head toward the ship. On the way, with just those that are leaving the island, a large group of goblins approaches them. The goblins state that they like the Bard's music, and want to know where he is. They also ask if they can take over the place where the cultists were cleared out from. The party says they may go ahead and do so, and goes on their way back toward the ship, where the captain is waiting for them, and they decide to set out immediately, back onto the waters towards their destinations.

The Walls have Ooze

In this installment, the party decided to go further into the catacombs, walking past one stone door and up to another. They ended up peeking into this far side door, seeing a pool with a black ooze already readying itself and coming towards the door. The party shut the door and began backing off, and the ooze started to break the door down.

Eventually smashing through, the ooze started to come for the party, but Garis made it afraid of his Halberd, since it seemed to have unnatural intelligence. Scorchtail then began launching fire into the ooze, burning parts of it away, but not causing it to retreat. Garis held the line at a choke point, making it hard for the ooze to advance.

Meanwhile, Altair went to check out the other door, and found that it was an armory. Inside, he walked around the middle of the room, and suits of armor began to glow and the door began to shut. He managed to make a break for the door and slip out, but not before his boot got trapped within the door and completely crushed, sparing his foot. Now, his boots only allowed him to travel half as fast while walking up walls and ceilings.

He came back down the hallway where the party was keeping the ooze at bay, but with more and more pouring out of the room. Baldric decided to try and play some music, hopefully to annoy or confuse the creature. He was successful in this, in that the ooze was blinded while he was playing due to the vibrations of the sound.

Marigold then learned that the ooze was the Walls' "Freedom", and that as more fire was launched into it, it decided to retreat to the room and comply with the party in order to keep some of this form. It told the party that Barang went behind the stone slab with the man, and that he put some key in the armory which the walls could not see where due to it being worked stone.

The party then went into this room, finding some new equipment, and a circle trap in the center they were able to avoid. Marigold turned into a spider and walked into this center looking for the key. She was able to discern that something was amiss, and wrapped spider webbing around something that was small and had been invisible. Pulling by this web, the party was able to get the pearl that was identified as something that would dispel magic on some object. They decided this was for the door.

Using the pearl, they were able to blow the door to pieces, and walk down this new hallway. They notice there is no voices heard ahead toward where Barang is, and get a little tense, likely they've been sensed. They get to the end of the hallway and notice an ornate Iron Door, and go to open it.

On the other side, there is a throne with some candles set up, and a figure pacing back and forth. On the floor lays a lifeless Barang, and with her death Garis's quest is over. The figure turns and tells the party they had wished the party had not come. He is Father Mannix, and he has a sullen look in his eyes as he faces the party.

We left on this cliffhanger, leaving the conclusion to the next session.

A Puzzling Puzzle

In this adventure, the party went down the stairs, where they saw a hallway with a large iron door on the right, and a circular room at the end of the hallway. The iron door was ornate, but they decided to check out further down the hallway, where they found a statue of some demonic creature with 4 arms and tentacles protruding from its body. They saw 2 wooden doors and a large stone door. The stone door appeared trapped, but the actual trap lay on the other side of the door.

The party found a holy symbol on the back side of the statue, and saw footsteps going around the statue. Because of this, they walked around the statue several times, and heard a click from behind one of the wooden doors. They entered the room, obviously a bedroom, to see a rather normal room, except there was an obsidian hand holding what appeared to be an eye. Baldric picked up the eye, and no matter what angle he held it, it was always looking at him. The rest of the party could see a triangle dug into the opposite side of the eye.

The party then decided to check out the other room, which appeared to be a meeting room. They saw a sign on the back that just said "Triangle Hand", implying some sort of message with the back of the eye and a hand. Going back out into the main room, they noticed a triangle sticking out of one of the demon statue's hands. Baldric decided to put the eye there, and the eye was crushed by the hand, splattering a blood-like substance across the room which quickly evaporated. Then, the stone door opened.

Inside was what appeared to be catacombs, which Marigold tried to talk to the walls of. The walls were defiant, claiming that Burang let them be free, and would not side with the enemy. The party decided to keep going down, until they found another stone door. Marigold then talked to some of the rats in the room, which revealed that the stone door was not a door and rather a sort of piece that was recently set up by someone. The party was left to puzzle this door for a while longer, contemplating whether to make noise by blasting it apart or to keep continuing down the catacombs.

Everybody Loves Pudding

In this session, the party bound the guard who tried running away, and the black Ooze in the room started to attack!

Cairan, having acid sprayed upon his boots, went around to the pipe with water coming out and decided to  try washing off what was left. The Pudding followed him, and struck him from the planters, narrowly missing him. He then went around the other way again, and Scorchtail used his new Axe to blow a hole in the Pudding, while another half of it started crawling up the wall toward Altair.

Even though Scorchtail lost his Axe across the room, he still used fire to quickly dispatch what was left in the room, but the party was able to learn some more from the guard they captured. They learned that the pudding didn't eat the pipe it came through because it was "taught" by Barang. They learned that it wasn't very much and that the Ooze didn't try to attack the guards in the guard room. They also discerned that they could use patches from the sleeves of the guards to try and blend in.

Marigold and Garis also talked the remaining guard (Frank) into leaving the cult. He wasn't too big on wanting to leave, and revealed that he believed the water supply was basically being used to prime people to be used in experiments if they got close to death, but otherwise was harmless. The party convinced him to take his family and leave the island.

The party then decided to dress up Altair and Garis as cultists, and act as having captured the rest of the party as prisoners, and then go through the cafe. Before they left, they decided to spike the barracks door in the other direction, which Marigold discovered in her rat form. After walking into the cafe, most of the guards were wowed, and thought Altair was a regional sort of commander from off island.

However, a couple of guards at the back recognized Garis, and said something along the line of having fought the paladin the day before. After some back and forth, the guard said to go ahead through the door, and Marigold, being a rat, listened in afterwards and found that the guards were confident that Barang's "guest" would take care of the party.

It's a Trap!

In this session, the party decided to try and go back into the cult's hideout. They figured the front entrance is always fortified, so they went back where they had previously gone. Here, they found the rock replaced, and when the paladin moved it out of the way, it shot arrows out that struck the party. One of the 4 arrows remained in the gadget, and there appeared to be a tripwire leading from that arrow further into the hallway.

Marigold decided to turn into a mouse and scout ahead, finding no sound in the room that previously held the Springvine. The party decided to avoid the tripwire, with Cairan almost setting it off, and they assumed the tripwire was for some security purpose. Then, they came to the room, and scouted it out a bit.

The room itself was dark, with 2 new pipes set up in the opposite corners of the room. The party assume that some sort of refuse comes out of the pipes, and turned their attention to the guard behind the arrow slit door. There was a lever that uses a sort or rope on a table opposite him, not yet secured to a wall or desk. He himself was quiet, likely looking into the room.

The party decided to set up a trap for him, with Marigold playing the part of bait. She turned into a bird and flew around the room, while the others waited by the door. The guard called out to his friend, and wanted to impress his friend by shooting the bird from behind the arrow slits. Marigold in response landed on top of the pipe on the right side, which turned on and spilled out some water.

After some discussion, the guard decided to open the door to shoot at the bird Marigold. As soon as he did so, Altair slammed downward with his sword, killing the man. Garis then issued a command to the other one, who became scared and threw the lever at him and ran off down the hall. The lever opened up the other pipe just a little, and some black sludge started to pile out. Garis was able to stop the guard trying to run away, but more sludge was coming out, and the guards were previously talking of how difficult it was to handle whatever was coming out.

This is where we had to end the session, just before the party could investigate the sludge itself.

Some Questions

In this session, the party was mostly questioning people. After the Assassin fell asleep from Altair's poison, he was tied up and stripped of most of his valuables. Garis, while the assassin slept, questioned Gombar about the deal he had made with the assassin.

Gombar said the assassin captured his brother, and so he made a deal with him for his safety. As far as the party could tell, Gombar did not gain anything extra out of this deal aside from this.

After the assassin awoke, the party then questioned him. Knowing that Altair had his wax back, he did not trying lying to the party, and told the truth, informing them of a stash of weapons at the front of the cultist's hideout. He also told them of a ship he had planned to use to get off the island, as well as the fact that he had to kill the Guard who was bashing down the door since the Guard was bent on finding Scorchtail.

After being satisfied by his answers, the party decided to tie him up in the cave, and rest a little while. During this time, Marigold was able to study and talk to the cave spiders, and as such learned a little about their culture. She was also able to remove the amulet, which she immediately was able to figure out was an Amulet of Wild Growth, allowing her to overgrow areas with natural phenomena almost instantly.

After this, the party decided that they needed to take care of the cultists before leaving, and were planning to take the ship to the north after defeating the cultists. They decided that they wanted to go to the entrance, as there may be more stuff that could help them there, and the cultists may be more prepared for the party to come in where they had before.

The Assassin's Bluff

In this adventure, the party came face to face with the Assassin on top of the ridge. First, Garis was struck, which poisoned him and made him silent. He then tried to move toward the fire, as a group of crows were commanded by Marigold to attack the Assassin. Knocked off balance, and having his own fire thrown at the tent, he was able to peak over the ledge momentarily.

Then, Baldric attempted to climb, falling and hurting his back. Altair quickly followed suite, but was not so grievously injured. Cairan then managed to climb quite far up the cliff face. Up upon the cliff, Garis went to grab a stick while Marigold swooped in for another attack with her Murder of crows, before landing near the rope in the forest. Baldric sang a song to heal Altair, but drew the attention of the Assassin, who launched a magical volley of arrows down the cliff face, damaging most of the party.

Cairan then made it up the cliff, and the man started to break away, when Marigold turned into a bear. The rest of the party down below started to go around at this point. The Assassin then jumped and ran up a tree, and stayed in the tree tops. He asked whether the party was with Altair, and found out quickly that they were. He then bargained with Altair, promising him the dwarf for a way to finder's metal in exchange for information on what he is going after.

Needing a little more information, the man then went up the even higher cliff face, and dangled the poor dwarf over the edge. As Altair continued to bargain, Bulrak the dwarf started to burn his own bindings, and landed in the forest, with the help of some trees that Marigold coaxed into helping him land a little less roughly.

The man, now frustrated that his bargaining chip escaped, ran down a different cliff face in order to get away. Unfortunately, he ran right into the party that was finding a way around. Oscar got a quick shot off, which knocked one of the man's boots off, leaving it on the wall. The man slid down, and was immediately fought by the party, able to deal some damage to some of them, but unable to defend against Altair's poison blade, which started to make him drowsy. He backed away and downed a healing potion, making sure he was full health before he would fall unconscious.

In the next session, we will go over what happens next as the Assassin falls unconscious from Altair's poison!

Stone Faced Speakers

In this adventure, the party decided to rest for the night, restoring almost all of their health. During this rest, Marigold decided to study the stone of the cave, learning how to turn into a stone-like creature, and how to talk to the stone itself. During the night, Someone came into the cave, and the party did not see who. They then found that the person left, and the party did not see them.

In the morning, Marigold asked the cave what was happening. After a little while, the cave revealed that someone came in, and then jumped up onto the ceiling, and then walked out. Altair was also annoyed in the morning, mumbling about his stuff being rifled through. Garis decided to confront him about the button from his cuff, which Altair revealed he still had his but it looked similar to another merchant from the ship.

After this, the party decided to follow the tracks from where the dwarf was captured, and eventually made it to a stream. Marigold asked some birds where the dwarf and whoever was dragging him around where they went, and went to a cliff, with footprints going straight up. Marigold decided to turn into a crow, and carry a rope to the top.

When she got to the top, there was a camp, with a man in leather armor, who saw her and went into the forest. She dropped the rope there, and failed to convince the other crows to drop rocks on the man, and dropped a couple of rocks off the cliff to show there was danger. Garis, therefore, put his halberd down and used pitons to climb the cliff quite well.

Once he got up there, a booming voice asked him who he was and at this Altair became a little nervous down at the bottom of the cliff. Garis asked the voice to come out, telling him to have honour and that Garis was unarmed. The man thus came out, fully armed and charging Garis at the top of the cliff, where we ended the session.

Notes: the player for Oscar has left, and his character will be turned into a sort of "hireling", and I'll be going over the rules for what that means during the next session. There is no animosity with this player, he just ended up needing to step out from lunch gaming entirely.

A dangerous encounter

The adventure started this week by the party deciding to start looking around outside for more information on what may have happened to the other dwarf. Once he went outside, Garis was shot at, and cultists yelled that they were surrounded. Some of the other party members stepped out as well, and Burang came out of the bushes, yelling something about her gods.

The, she hurled the giant axe at Garis, who noticed some sort of magical thread tying the throw to him, which he used his force of will to detach, lodging the axe firmly into the ground. Then, Burang ran up, and was damaged badly by Garis's call to action, but she managed to grab her axe and remove it, causing an explosion that hurt all of those around her.

Then, Marigold successfully turned into a grizzly bear, and knocked the axe from Burang's hands. Burang began going for the axe yet again, unleashing some fire upon parts of the party. Baldric managed to get a shot off, but put himself too close to the edge of the clearing, getting himself shot by other cultists. Cairan tried to pick up the axe, but was singed by Burang's fire and backed off.

All this while, Altair was merely watching, unsure of which side to truly take. Scorchtail ran up to grab the axe, but was tripped by Burang and prevented from grabbing it. Then, Garis again went for a mighty blow, but Divine Intervention set in and prevented the strike. Another mauling from Marigold sent Burang down.

However, a darkness fell over the clearing, and what looked to be ethereal Springvine shot out, piercing nearby cultists and killing them. Burang then got up, with what looked to be a large dark puppeteer controlling her body, and she remarked how the missing parts of their experiments was death. Now, fully healed, the resurrected Burang came at them again, striking her axe deep into Garis and pushing him back.

The rest of the party had a bit of damage, but Oscar managed to be coming out of the cave when he heard of the book "They Undying", remembering it as one of the missing books from the library and unleashed a volley of magic missiles. Scorchtail also sent a fiery bolt into Burang's back, and Marigold scattered up into the trees as a squirrel. Baldric called out to his new companions, healing them slightly, and Cairan did the same with Garis, keeping him in the fight. Altair finally decided to pick a side, and launched daggers into Burang, but incurred the wrath of nearby cultists, who shot at him from the bushes.

Garis then delivered another blow to Burang, who, badly damaged, released the axe and made a run for it. As she was leaving she was terrorized by birds, bats, spiders, and other small creatures of the forest, yelling out that this was not the end.

The party then used divine prowess to discover how to remove the axe without it exploding, which they did. The axe itself is listed in the Wiki, and is called Volcanic Edge.

A Tactical Retreat

The party, now in a cramped room with 2 archers, pondered their next move. Scorchtail, however, decided to set down his weapon, on a desk. Which burst into flame. One archer scrambled to get a water bucket from the room next door and found all of the planters on fire. The other archer decided to run to get more help with the fire, when Marigold tripped him.

The archers, now seeing them as enemies, decided to take action. The one running for help decided to continue to get help, of the fighting kind. The other latched the double doors from the other side. Oscar blasted the other archer with a Magic Missile, which did not kill him, and the archer called out for help. Hearing footsteps coming, Oscar teleported to the other side of the door, unlatched it, and then latched it once the party was in the planters. The archer on that side ran for it and made it out.

Then, the party awaited the guards coming down the hall, and then Scorchtail blasted them with fire, dispatching 2 and singing the rest. The party then ran back outward, where Garis collapsed an archway, and the party put a desk in the gap above the door and set it aflame. Here is where they heard an awful scream, one of a Salamander woman.

The party decided it was a good idea to run, and the rubble they just created got blasted out of the way, and a flaming axe slammed into the door and tore it to shreds. Oscar cast cause fear, and instead Burang raised the body of the dead guard (who was now identified as Trif, one of the 3 who talked to Cairan). The zombie was trudging along, slowed without armored boots, and almost reached the party outside when Cairan Turned him, causing him to run back towards Burang and allowing the party to escape.

In the woods, the party decided to send out Marigold to check out how the dwarves were doing. There, she noticed some blood, and multiple sets of footprints, and found Gombar. Gombar said his brother went out for a bit and didn't come back. The party then noisily went back to that cave, but encountered no cultists on the way.

Once there, Garis did more thorough investigation, finding a cuff link and Gombar showing a small tunnel a halfling could fit in. Marigold then went in, after getting a magically lighted branch, and found a lot of webs on the other side. She saw a magical necklace in the webs, and turned into a spider to sense movement on the webs. She sensed quite a lot of movement, so she decided to turn back and leave back through the tunnel she came through, although she detected a few other tunnels leading into this room.

Alas, no shoes were gained in this session.
